Presidential election: Abdelmadjid Tebboune, independent candidate

 ALGIERS- The independent candidate for the forthcoming presidential election of September 7, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is participating for the second consecutive time in such an event after his election as President of the Republic on 12 December 2019.

 Born on November 17, 1945, in Mecheria (Naama province), Abdelmadjid Tebboune began his schooling in the province of Sidi Bel Abbes, where his family settled after intimidation and persecution by the French colonizer due to his father's nationalist speeches and his membership in the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema.

He joined the free school of imams in 1953 and passed the middle school exam in 1957. He continued his studies at the Regional High School, then at Benzerdjeb High School, and obtained his baccalaureate in 1965.

In 1969, he graduated from the National School of Administration (specializing in Economics-Finance) in the second class named after the Martyr and hero Larbi Ben M'hidi."

Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune began his professional career in the capital of the province of Bechar, then called Saoura, encompassing Bechar, Tindouf and Adrar. He continues his journey that he started as an administrator, then as a chargé de mission, before being promoted to the position of Secretary General of the wilaya of Djelfa in 1974.

In 1976, he was transferred to the province of Adrar in the same position, then to the wilaya of Batna in 1977, before occupying the same function in the wilaya of M'Sila in 1982.

Subsequently, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune successively held the position of governor of Adrar, Tiaret and Tizi Ouzou.

He was appointed Deputy Minister in charge of Local Authorities in 1991, Minister of Communication and Culture in 1999, and Minister of Housing and Urban Planning in 2001.

In 2012, he was again appointed Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City, before occupying, in 2017, the position of interim Minister of Commerce. On May 24, 2017, he was appointed Prime Minister.

Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune ran for the highest office for the first time in the presidential election of December 12, 2019, which he won with a program containing 54 commitments covering all areas for the building of the new Algeria.
