Presidential Election: Biography of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune 

ALGIERS-The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has been re-elected for a second term in the Presidential Election held on 7 September 2024, with 84.30% of the votes cast, according to the final results announced Saturday by the Constitutional Court.

Born on November 17, 1945, in Mecheria (Naama province), Abdelmadjid Tebboune began his schooling in Sidi Bel Abbes province, where his family settled after intimidation and persecution by the French colonizer due to his father's nationalist speeches and his membership in the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema.

He joined the free school of imams in 1953 and passed the middle school exam in 1957. He continued his studies at the Regional High School, then at Benzerdjeb High School and obtained his baccalaureate in 1965.

In 1969, he graduated from the National School of Administration (specializing in Economics-Finance) in the second class named after the Martyr and hero Larbi Ben M'hidi.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune began his professional career in the capital of Bechar province, then called Saoura, which included Bechar, Tindouf and Adrar. He carried on his journey that he started as an administrator, then as a chargé de mission, before being promoted to Secretary General of Djelfa province in 1974.

In 1976, he was transferred to Adrar province in the same position, then to Batna province in 1977, before taking up the same function in M'Sila province in 1982.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune successively held the position of governor of Adrar, Tiaret and Tizi Ouzou. He was appointed Deputy Minister in charge of Local Authorities in 1991, Minister of Communication and Culture in 1999, and Minister of Housing and Urban Planning in 2001.

In 2012, he was again appointed Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City, before occupying, in 2017, the position of interim Minister of Trade. On May 24, 2017, he was appointed Prime Minister.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune ran for the country’s highest office for the first time in the December 12, 2019 presidential election and was elected President of the Republic. [/ecr]
