“We had profound discussions on current regional and international events, particularly the Zionist aggression against Gaza and Lebanon, and I take this opportunity to hail, once again, the action brought by South Africa before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and reaffirm our full support to this approach,” said the President of the Republic in a joint press statement with the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, at the end of their talks at the headquarters of the Presidency.
“Regarding the situation in the region, we discussed the Western Saharan cause, on which we reaffirmed the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and the exercise of their legitimate rights in accordance with the international legality,” he added.
The President of the Republic further said that he exchanged with his brother, the President of South Africa, “points of view regarding the situation in the Sahel, Libya, Sudan, Central Africa and in Southern Africa” and discussed “other issues related to the AU’s actions.”
These exchanges highlighted “a convergence of views between our two countries on the necessity of favouring negotiated political solutions for resolving crises away from external interference,” he noted.
He added that they also agreed to intensify efforts within the United Nations and the African Union to “strengthen the role of our continent and work to achieve the African demand for Security Council reform by repairing the historical injustice towards Africa, in accordance with the Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.”
The President of the Republic further said that the State visit of his South African counterpart to Algeria “mirrors the particularity of the historical relations between the two countries, founded on close cooperation and permanent solidarity” and “the strategic nature of our bilateral relations.”
The President of the Republic noted that this visit had furthermore allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of the state of bilateral relations and to examine ways to raise them “to the level of the common political will,” emphasizing that the holding of the 7th session of the Algerian-South African Joint High Commission on Cooperation, alongside the Business Forum between the countries, offered “a space for exchanges between economic operators.”
During this visit, a Strategic Partnership Declaration between Algeria and South Africa was signed, as well as five memorandums of understanding between the two countries, said President Tebboune.
The President of the Republic once again welcomed his brother, the President of South Africa, and the delegation accompanying him, he also wished them “a pleasant stay in his country, Algeria, which had previously welcomed the leader, Nelson Mandela.”.
