Algeria, key partner for United Kingdom in Africa

ALGIERS — The Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Algeria, James Robert Stephen Downer, affirmed on Thursday that Algeria is an essential partner for the United Kingdom in Africa.

“The United Kingdom views Algeria as a key African partner,” Downer said after presenting his credentials to the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

He emphasized his government's commitment “to advancing bilateral cooperation in all fields.”

The ambassador hailed Anglo-Algerian relations as “robust, founded on partnership and mutual respect,” highlighting that both countries were “bound by close ties in trade, defense, culture and education.”

He further noted that his country had acknowledged “the interest shown by Algerians in using English language in education.”

The British ambassador outlined the UK's willingness to “expand bilateral cooperation with Algeria on climate action and energy transition challenges” and to “further strengthen the momentum in industry and services to support growth in both countries.”

He also highlighted “the cooperation between the two countries at the UN Security Council, particularly following Algeria's accession to the presidency of this body,” expressing his wish for enhanced cooperation between both parties.
