Elimination of nuclear tests’ waste in Algerian desert: France called upon to fully assume responsibility

ALGIERS- The Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, reiterated Monday Algeria’s position which requires that France fully assumes its responsibility in eliminating the waste of the nuclear tests carried out in the Algerian desert during the colonial period.

In a brief address following a plenary session at the Council of the Nation, devoted to the presentation, by the minister of Environment and Life Quality, Nadjiba Djilali, of a bill on waste management, control and elimination, Goudjil called on the Council’s specialized commission ( equipment and local development) to include in its report “the necessity of speeding up the promulgation of regulatory texts on the aforementioned bill” and of “emphasizing Algeria’s position, through the Council of the Nation, requiring that France fully assumes its responsibility in the elimination of the waste of the nuclear tests carious out by the French colonizer in the Algerian desert during the colonial period.”

 

“The Algerian people, particularly the inhabitants of the regions concerned by these tests, are still suffering from their deleterious effects,” he said.

 

In this regard, Goudjil welcomed the level of debates and addresses made by the Council’s members on this bill.  [/ecr]
