The seminar's proceedings were opened by the speaker of the People's National Assembly, Brahim Boughali, in the presence of members of the government, representatives of many governmental and official bodies, MPs and civil society members.
Held at Abdellatif-Rahal International Conference Centre, the seminar reiterated the lower house's the commitment "to shed light on historical issues with humanitarian and environmental concern."
It tackled "the devastating effects of the nuclear explosions conducted by the colonial power in Algeria, whose deleterious effects persist to this day."
The seminar is meant to "raise public awareness of this historic crime" and to "open a debate on how to achieve environmental justice, do justice to the victims and ensure compensation for the damages."
Legal, environmental and health experts will put the spotlight on the health, environmental and legal aspects of the explosions, and look at the national efforts to mitigate the effects of this environmental disaster.
