Algeria has strong chances of obtaining membership in AU Peace, Security Council

ADDIS ABABA- Algeria has a strong chance of obtaining a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for the North African region, in elections postponed to the next month, after obtaining 30 votes out of the required 33 on Wednesday, thus outpacing Morocco in all rounds of voting with a gap of nearly double.

Algeria, which will run again for this position in the elections postponed to next month, consistently outperformed Morocco throughout all six rounds of voting, maintaining nearly a two-to-one lead. In the final round, Algeria received 30 votes while Morocco got 17, effectively eliminating Morocco from the race and demonstrating Algeria’s significant influence across the continent.

During these elections, which took place on the first day of the meeting of the African Union (AU) Executive Council, held in seven (7) consecutive rounds, Algeria beat the two other competing countries, namely Libya and Morocco, for the 2025-2027 mandate.

Since no candidate secured the required two-thirds majority of 33 votes, the African Union Commission has postponed the final vote until next month.

In keeping with its pattern of disinformation campaigns against Algeria, Morocco has avoided acknowledging both its candidacy for the position and its elimination by Algeria in the voting process.
