Entitled “Global Gas Report 2024”, the document, drafted in collaboration with the Italian natural gas transporter “Snam” and the Independent Research and Business Intelligence Company “Rystad Energy”, said that Algeria exported 18 billion m3 of natural liquified gas (LNG) and 34 billion m3 in 2023.

Russia tops the ranking with 139 billion m3, followed by Qatar (128 billion m3), the United States of America (127 billion m3), Norway (120 billion m3), Australia (110 billion m3) and Canada (53 billion m3).

The report unveiled the ranking of natural gas importers, with China as the top importer (160 billion m3 imported last year), followed by Japan (91 billion m3) and Germany (77 billion m3).

Regarding demand, Asia's imports rose in 2023, a trend that is set to continue until 2024, “as countries such as China become increasingly dependent on gas imports,” IGU points out.

By contrast, European demand has fallen due to lower seasonal requirements and reduced demand from the power and industrial sectors.

The report states that global LNG trade reached 537 billion m3 in 2023 and that LNG is of “growing importance” in a global context of energy security concerns and supply uncertainty.

As a result, the United States became the world's leading net LNG exporter in 2023, outperforming Australia and Qatar.[/ecr]
