The memorandum was signed by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and the US ambassador to Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin, on the sidelines of the opening of the 12th Africa & Mediterranean Energy & Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference (NAPEC 2024).

The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, Fazia Dahlab, the Minister of Vocational Training and Education, Yacine Merabi, along with the CEOs of Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal, respectively, as well as ambassadors from various countries.

The Minister of Energy and Mines pointed out that extensive discussions and consultations led to this memorandum, which he described as "crucial for our country, especially regarding our international climate commitments, as it aims to support efforts in identifying pollution sources and greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane".

Under this memorandum of agreement, the two sides work, according to Arkab, to strengthening and promoting cooperation in climate action, reducing the effects of methane gas through supporting efforts to determine sources of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, through a series of cooperative activities, including workshops, conferences and exchange of knowledge and experiences, organizing training programs, implementing pilot projects on advanced techniques, in addition to identifying joint projects to reduce methane gas and, finally, to establish strategies to combat greenhouse gas emissions, especially methane, in the hydrocarbon sector.

The minister said that the memorandum also facilitates the exchange of information and experiences on best practices and technological applications. This covers technical, regulatory, and legal aspects of measuring, detecting, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially methane. The goal is to reduce methane emissions in both Algeria and the United States, while fostering cooperation between government bodies, academic institutions, research centres, public sector representatives, and national companies in both countries.

For her part, the Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Fazia Dahleb said that this convention will contribute to fighting against gas emissions that cause heat emissions and this is part of the participation in global efforts to reduce toxic gas emissions, recalling Algeria's strategy related to this aspect.

As for the Ambassador of the United States of America to Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin, she emphasized her country's commitment to cooperating with Algeria and all global partners to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce global warming.
