Renewable energy: Lithium mining to consolidate Algeria’s place in global energy value chain

ALGIERS—The Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Arkab, said Tuesday that lithium mining will make Algeria a key player in green energy and consolidate its place in the global energy value chain.

Chairing a workshop on the development of lithium mining, in the presence of the Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy in charge of Renewable Energy, Noureddine Yassaa, and the Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy in charge of Mines, Karima Tafeur, Arkab said that “the time has come to focus on strategic minerals with strong added value, including lithium, which has become one of the most important materials to make Algeria a key green technology player.”

Arkab stressed that lithium was a key component in battery development, electric cars, and energy storage systems and thus “a strategic opportunity to strengthen Algeria’s place in the global energy value chain.”

The meeting was attended by CEOs and director generals of bodies under the sector, the director general of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI), and famous experts and scientists, Pr. Karim Zaghib, an international expert in lithium-running batteries manufacturing, and Pr. Kamal Youcef Toumi.
