LISBON (Portugal)- Algerian athlete Sonia Asselah has won the bronze medal at the international judo tournament the Grand Prix of Portugal, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon in the city of Odivelas, after her defeat in a semifinal (+78 kg) to Japanese Miki Mukunoki.

Exempted from the first round, Asselah started the competition in the second round, against Kazakh Kamila Berlikash, also exempted from the first round.

The Algerian beat her Kazakh opponent before defeating Venezuelan Amarantha Venurdaneta in a semifinal.

In the final of the pool stage (Group D), Sonia Asselah dominated Australian Sydnee Andrews, and qualified for the tournament semifinals, in which she competed against Japanese Miki Mukunoki, to whom she lost after a bitter fight.

In the Grand Prix of Portugal, Algeria competed with three judokas in a tournament that is an opportunity for athletes to gain points allowing them to book a berth for to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The two other Algerian representatives, namely Belkadi Amina (-63 kg) and Dris Messaoud (-73 kg), were eliminated Saturday, respectively in the second and the third round.
