Communication minister calls to establish first ethical charter for sports media

ALGIERS- Minister of Communication Mohamed Laagab called, in a meeting on “sports media: between the right to information and journalistic responsibility” that he chaired on Thursday at the lecture hall of “Nelson Mandela” stadium in Baraki, to establish the first ethical charter for sports media, to be enriched in the future.

In a statement made at the opening of this meeting, held in the presence of Minister of Youth and Sports, Abderrahmane Hammad, chairman of the National Organization of Algerian sporting journalists (ONJSA), Youcef Tazir and a number of journalists and sports personalities, Laagab expressed his wish to see “this meeting’s recommendations lay the foundations for the establishment of a first ethical charter for sports media that will be enriched in the future, despite the existence of laws and legislations on the ethics of the profession, in addition to the creation of the Award for the best sports journalist.”

“We will provide you with the necessary support for its implementation,” he added.

Speaking at the ONJSA event, Laagab said that "Sports journalists are expected to specialize , as all eyes are on them due to their significant influence, adding that "It's understandable that journalists' work is heavily spotlighted in order to elevate sports journalism to the highest professional standards."

Moreover, the minister stressed specialization for sports journalists to keep them focused on their core responsibilities and empower them to carry out their roles comprehensively.

He promised to provide the necessary support to implement the recommendations of the four workshops organized on this occasion, agreeing to sponsor the award for the best sports journalist.
