President of the Republic: Situation in Gaza to remain dark stain on history of humanity

AMMAN-The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Tuesday that the tragic situation being experienced by the population of the Gaza Strip will remain a dark stain on the history of humanity, given the international community's inability to show impartiality towards the Palestinian cause.

In a speech read on his behalf by Health Minister Abdelhak Saihi at the high-level conference on “Emergency Humanitarian Response in Gaza,” held in Amman (Jordan), the President of the Republic said: “I hope this important event will lead to practical solutions that alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian brothers in Gaza and address their worrying humanitarian situation.”

"As we meet today, thousands of defenseless children, women and elderly people are falling prey to a machine of destruction and killing. This will remain a dark stain on the history of humanity in the face of the international community's inability to show impartiality towards the Palestinian cause,” he asserted.

As a non-permanent member of the Security Council and a member of the Human Rights Council, Algeria has worked to “present resolutions calling for a ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of aid and to ensure compliance with international decisions,” said the President of the Republic.

Algeria has also sent humanitarian aid, in coordination with sister country Egypt, and provided assistance to UNRWA, in a move aimed at alleviating the suffering of our brothers in the State of Palestine, said the Head of State.

“In line with the principles of its foreign policy, Algeria sets forth three goals, the first of which relates to the activation of UN resolutions calling for a ceasefire and the adoption of mechanisms for an immediate ceasefire,” continued the President of the Republic, welcoming Resolution 2735 which, he said, “must be implemented immediately to put an end to the suffering of the defenseless Palestinian people.”

Algeria's second objective is to “guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected populations, with the implementation of Security Council resolution 2728”, while the third and final objective concerns “the necessary activation of the process in favor of a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian question,” the President of the Republic detailed.

“Pending the achievement of these goals, and out of a sense of responsibility, I would like to take this opportunity to announce our decision to bring forward the payment of the second instalment of Algeria's financial contribution to the Palestinian Authority's budget for the current year, in the hope that this measure will help to alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian brothers at this difficult time,” said the President of the Republic.[/ecr]
