Ambassador Taleb Omar welcomes Africa's role in support of Western Sahara

ALGIERS- The ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Algeria, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, on Tuesday welcomed Africa's role in supporting Western Sahara cause given Moroccan regime's lack of seriousness in holding a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.

The statement was made at a meeting between the Sahrawi ambassador and Nkrumah Samia Yaba Christina, the daughter of the former president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, on the sidelines of an international seminar on the African Dimension of the Algerian Revolution, opened Tuesday in Algiers.

"We welcome the role of Africa and its position in support of Western Sahara cause given the Moroccan regime's delaying tactics and lack of seriousness in holding a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people allowing them to exercise their right to independence," Omar Taleb told reporters following a meeting on the sidelines of the conference, hosted by the National Institute of Global Strategy Studies, in collaboration with the Saharawi Institute of Strategic Studies.

Africa, he added, had first recognized the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as a member of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), then as a founding member of the African Union (AU).

"We should have today a unified African position to ensure the decolonization of the last colony in Africa, liberate the continent, launch the economic, cultural and social development process, and establish sovereignty over the continent's resources."
