At Algeria's request, UN Security Council discusses attacks on UNRWA staff in Gaza

NEW YORK (UNITED NATIONS) — The United Nations Security Council examined Thursday, at Algeria's request, Wednesday's two air attacks conducted by the Zionist entity against a school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza, killing 18 people including women, children and six members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Algeria's request for this meeting follows widespread international condemnation of this attack. Several countries and organizations have denounced the Zionist entity's deliberate attack on shelters, which amounts to a war crime under international law. International humanitarian law provides special protection for humanitarian infrastructure and workers.

As international condemnation mounts, the Zionist entity has attempted to deflect blame by claiming that Palestinian factions are using civilians as human shields, leading to these tragic losses.

The Zionist entity resorts to these same arguments whenever it faces increased pressure, with a view to escaping the persistent calls to end impunity and prosecute those responsible for these crimes before the competent authorities.

The UN Secretary-General's spokesperson released a statement condemning the killing of these innocents, calling for a thorough, independent investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He further reiterated the United Nations Secretary-General's call for an immediate ceasefire.
