Algeria calls to rebalance lost international relation system through “serious” process

NEW YORK (United Nations) - Algeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, stressed on Monday, the need to launch a “serious” process aimed at restoring the lost balance in the system of international relations in its political, economic and social dimensions.

In a speech delivered during the Summit of the Future, held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Attaf underscored that Algeria “welcomes the qualitative results of this summit (...) and it commits to contributing to their implementation on the ground,” emphasizing “the imperative to launch a serious process aimed at restoring the lost balance in the system of international relations in its political, economic and social dimensions.”

“This lost balance is the main source of tensions and dysfunction of the international relations’ governance, which is marked by the marginalisation of developing countries, notably African countries, within the Council of Security in particular and different financial, monetary and banking institutions in general,” said the minister.

“Algeria warmly welcomes the holding of this summit and the positive dynamic that accompanied this valuable initiative by the UN Secretary-General,” emphasized Attaf, considering that this momentum “shows that hope remains regarding the capacity of our organization to take things back in hand and assume its role as a unifying framework to forge the necessary consensus between member States in the face of the many challenges.”

Attaf also emphasized that “the international community is in dire need for a collective reaction to solve the current situation and joint efforts to overcome the risks surrounding it from every side, including the crises and wars that are intensifying and multiplying day by day, the development inequalities that continue to deepen, and the climatic and environmental risks that have reached unprecedented levels.”

“Since we all are convinced that the UN is vital and irreplaceable, we are certain that this organisation needs a profound reform to ensure its durability and ability to adapt to the challenges of our era, restore its vital role as the beating heart of the international diplomacy and multilateralism, and to enable it to respond to the aspirations of the present and future generations,” said the minister of Foreign Affairs.

It is worth noting that Attaf has been participating, since Sunday in New York, in the Summit of the Future as a representative of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.[/ecr]
