“We once again call on the conflicting parties to cease hostilities unconditionally, exercise calm and restraint and work toward de-escalation,” stated Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, during Thursday's session on “Maintaining Peace and Security in Ukraine.”

“Algeria reiterates its call upon both Russia and Ukraine to fully uphold their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law. Targeting civilians and civilian objects is prohibited and must be avoided in any circumstances,” the diplomat emphasized, asserting that civilian protection should be “a priority” for both sides.

“It is also vital to reverse the trend and to de-escalate tensions. Escalation has so far proven its negative impact on civilian populations,” Bendjama underscored.

Furthermore, “we reiterate our call to the parties to engage in genuine dialogue and negotiations to end this war for good,” he stated.

The ambassador added that Russia, Ukraine and the international community “should give a real chance” to inclusive and constructive dialogue to yield results.

“We encourage the parties to direct their efforts toward a just and lasting solution built on UN Charter principles,” he affirmed, indicating that such a solution must address the security concerns of all parties.
