UN: Attaf meets, in New York, with counterparts from brotherly, friendly countries

ALGIERS - Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, met on Tuesday in New York with several of his counterparts from brotherly and friendly countries, on the sidelines of his chairmanship of the high-level meetings scheduled as part of Algeria’s presidency of the Security Council, according to a statement from the ministry.

[ecr] In this regard, "the Minister of State held discussions with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Tanja Fajon; Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi; Libyan Minister in charge of managing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the National Unity Government of the State of Libya, Taher Al-Baour; Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Rwanda, Olivier Nduhungirehe; and Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Hamish Falconer," the source said.

Attaf’s meeting with his Slovenian counterpart allowed for "reviewing the progress made in strengthening the economic partnership between the two countries" and "exchanging views on several issues on the Security Council’s agenda."

The discussions with the Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs focused on "ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and strengthen coordination between the two countries during their current terms as members of the Security Council, in service of Arab and African causes."

With the Libyan Minister, Attaf "reviewed developments in the situation on the Libyan scene and discussed continuing joint efforts to deepen fraternal and cooperative relations between the two brotherly countries."

With his Rwandan counterpart, the Minister of State "exchanged views and analyses on several current African issues and explored prospects for promoting bilateral relations in light of what was agreed upon by the leaders of the two countries during their meeting last December."

The meeting with the British Under-Secretary of State was an opportunity to "discuss ways to continue the strategic dialogue and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries," the source concluded. [/ecr]
