Algeria, January’s Council president, will chair this meeting during which the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, is expected to brief via videoconference (VTC) from Damascus.

This marks the second time this January that Security Council members meet to discuss the situation in Syria, after having held their regular meeting on political and humanitarian developments on 8 January.
