The resolution, proposed by Great Britain and Northern Ireland and adopted unanimously, extends by one year, until 31 January 2026, the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus.
Before closing the session, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, expressed the Algerian delegation’s sincere gratitude to all Council members for their support throughout Algeria’s Security Council presidency month, emphasizing that this session was the last official session of January, chaired by Algeria.
“We hoped for a calm start to the year, but it turned out to be quite intense,” he said.
Recalling that when the council adopted its work program on the first day of the Algerian presidency, “everyone thanked me for the light schedule of 16 meetings. I didn't understand why at first, but I soon realized those empty slots in the calendar wouldn’t stay empty for long.”
“What we achieved would have been impossible without your support and the constructive input from every delegation and their dedicated representatives,” Bendjama concluded.
