According to local explanations, this strategic 840 km road is being built by Algerian companies, enabling Algeria, for the first time since its independence, to build a major infrastructure project outside its borders.
The agreement to build this border project was signed on the occasion of the state visit to Algeria by Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, at the invitation of President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in December 2021.
Around ten Algerian companies are involved in the implementation of this vital project, as well as an Algerian design office responsible for monitoring it.
Once this major project is completed, it will be operated by Algeria under a 10-year concession with tacit extension, while the contract to build this infrastructure, so dreamt of by the inhabitants of the regions, will come into force once the work has been completed.
The numerous service stations along the route will be built and operated by Naftal.
The launch of this strategic project, which announces a new stage in the historic relations between Algeria and Mauritania, should open up major international routes and give Algerian operators access to African markets via Mauritania.
The project will also help to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries' operators, and to boost economy and trade. [/ecr]
