Upper House adopts bill on rules of disaster risk prevention, intervention and reduction

ALGIERS- The members of the Council of the Nation (Parliament’s Upper House) adopted Tuesday, in Algiers, in a plenary session chaired by Salah Goudjil, the Council’s speaker, the bill on the rules of disaster risk prevention, intervention and reduction as part of sustainable development.

After the vote, the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning Brahim Merad said that this bill is “another step in dealing with the disaster risks as part of sustainable development” and “lays the foundations of a sound legal framework which embodies the 33rd commitment of the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in which he stressed the necessity of working for a quality living environment respecting the requirements of sustainable development, the preservation of environment, the protection of property and the conservation of resources.”

 

He also expressed his sector’s commitment to completing the new arsenal by promulgating implementing regulations of this law as soon as possible, in addition to the adoption of a communication and promotion plan for the different provisions of the law in coordination with the different players, in order to ensure their smooth and effective implementation.

 

This 92-article text, spread across 9 chapters, including 24 new articles and 66 revised ones, aims to address the shortcomings in the law in force through “the definition of strategic objectives and risk apprehension, the compliance with Agreement of Paris and Sendai Framework.”
