ALGIERS-Algeria's Minister of National Solidarity, the Family and Women’s Affairs, Kaouter Krikou underlined from New York Algeria's commitment to protecting women against all forms of violence, and its determination to redouble its efforts to enhance the various mechanisms available to them, said a Ministry press release on Wednesday.

In her address to the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, themed "Accelerating the Achievement of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls through Poverty Eradication, Institution-building and Gender-responsive Financing,” Krikou pointed out that "Algeria has always insisted on the social nature of its development model through its constant commitment to strengthening national solidarity programs, mechanisms for achieving social justice and equal development opportunities.”

All this "is enshrined in the country's supreme law under the constitutional amendment of November 2020, following the election of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who reaffirmed the State's commitment to protecting women against all forms of violence, anywhere and at any time,” she recalled.

After hailing the resistance and resilience of Palestinian women in the face of the barbarity of the Zionist occupier, who has violated all rights and international charters in Gaza, the Minister outlined Algeria's experience in protecting and empowering women, pointing out that "the Algerian Constitution has enshrined the principle of parity in candidacies for elections to elected assemblies, under the open list and the organic law on the election system for the year 2021, which requires lists to include the same number of candidates of both sexes, in legislative or local elections.”

Krikou also stressed that the Constitution "enshrines the principle of parity between men and women in the labor market, notably through the economic empowerment of women,” stressing that "Algeria has adopted an employment policy based on equity and equal opportunities for all in access to employment and equal pay for both sexes.”

As part of the fight against poverty and social precariousness, a global strategy has been adopted to better direct social aid to targeted categories, without discrimination.[/ecr]
