"The day is being celebrated (in Algeria) to mark the achievements made by our country in terms of child protection and promotion," Cherfi said at a ceremony she chaired at the Riad El Feth Office.

The ceremony was organised in coordination with the General Directorate of National Police on the occasion of the International Day of African Child (June 16).

Mentioning the legal framework set up in the field, Cherfi said the Algerian Constitution enshrines "all children's rights, including free and compulsory education, access to healthcare and the best interests of the child."

Cherfi underlined the establishment of enforcement mechanisms, including the creation of the National Body for Child Protection and Promotion, tasked with the coordination of the efforts of all actors involved, such as civil society, journalists and artists.
