Algerian filmmaker Yamina Bachir Chouikh passes away

ALGIERS- Algerian filmmaker Yamina Bachir Chouikh died on Sunday morning, in Algiers, at the age of 68 following a long illness, according to the Association Adwaa.

[ecr] Born on 20 March 1954 in Algiers, the deceased started her career at the National Center of the Algerian Cinema (1973) where she specialized in the editing.  

Wife of great film director Mohamed Chouikh and mother of young filmmaker Yasmine Chouikh, the deceased, who mastered several cinema professions, participated in several works such as Merzak Alouach’s “Omar Guatlato” (1976) and Mohamed Lakhder Hamina’s “Vents du Sud” (1982).

She made her first feature film “Rachida” in 2002 which deals with the black decade in Algeria.

She was awarded and nominated in several festivals, including the Cannes 2002.  

Late Yamina Bahcir Chouikh will be buried today after Dohr prayer at El Alia cemetery. [/ecr]
