WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (KUNA) - The US army conducted airstrikes on areas related to ISIS terrorist group in Somalia, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced in a statement on Saturday.
Hegseth affirmed that at President Trump's direction and in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, the US Africa Command were authorized to conduct coordinated airstrikes targeting ISIS-Somalia operatives in the Golis mountains.
He added in the statement that initial assessments indicate multiple operatives were killed in the airstrikes and no civilians were harmed.
For his part, US President Donald Trump also stated that the attacks destroyed terrorist areas and resulted in the deaths of many militants.
Trump shared a post on his platform, Truth Social, highlighting the US Army operation targeting terrorists, emphasizing that the mission had not been accomplished by former President Joe Biden and his administration. (end)
