August 15, 2024 (GENEVA) – U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello Thursday welcomed the decision by the Sudanese  Sovereign Council to open the Adré border crossing, calling it a “critical step” in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn nation. “This is a vital move to save lives and prevent the spread of famine,” Perriello said in a statement released following a meeting of international delegations in Geneva. “We look forward to seeing the first aid convoys cross in the coming days.” The opening of the Adre crossing, located on the border with Chad, will allow for the delivery of much-needed food, medicine, and other supplies to the Darfur region, which has been particularly hard-hit by the conflict. Perriello also called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to ensure the safety and operational independence of aid groups entering through the crossing. “We all must take immediate steps to move humanitarian assistance into Darfur and across Sudan with safe and unhindered passage to the people in need,” he said.
