December 7, 2024 (UM AL-QURA) – The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) retook the town of Um al-Qura in Al Jazirah state on Saturday after the army and allied militias withdrew, according to military sources. The army and its allies, including the Sudan Shield Forces led by Abu Aqla Kikl, had seized Um al-Qura on December 2. They used the town as a base to launch attacks deeper into Al Jazirah state, reaching villages 20 km (12 miles) from the state capital, Wad Madani. “The army and its allies withdrew from Um al-Qura after a large-scale RSF attack from three fronts,” a military source told Sudan Tribune. The source said the RSF deployed suicide drones and heavy weapons in the assault, having brought in reinforcements from areas east of the Nile in Khartoum. RSF fighters posted videos online confirming their control of Um al-Qura, including the local government headquarters. Military sources said the army was carrying out air strikes on RSF positions in Um al-Qura in an attempt to force them back. The army and its allies were regrouping, the sources added.
