December 8, 2024 (OMDURMAN) – Malnutrition has killed 29 people in Sudan’s West Omdurman in recent weeks, a local official said on Sunday, as the number of cases soared to 6,500 amid fighting and a humanitarian crisis. The Umbadda district, west of the capital, Khartoum, has been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since conflict erupted in April between the paramilitary group and the army. “The medical office recorded the deaths of 29 people due to malnutrition,” the official, who declined to be named for security reasons, told Sudan Tribune. The deaths, recorded in November and early December, included 10 children, 15 elderly people and four women. Sixty-five communal kitchens providing food for around 150,000 families have shut due to funding shortages, the official added, warning of a further rise in malnutrition cases. “We appeal to Khartoum state committees and international organizations to urgently intervene to provide necessary aid and restart the kitchens,” the official said. Authorities in areas controlled by the army have imposed tight restrictions on the delivery of goods to RSF-held territory, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
