January 13, 2025 (JEBEL MARRA, Darfur) – In a move to safeguard civilians amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan, two armed groups in Darfur have announced the formation of a second joint force. This new alliance, independent from the existing joint force allied with the Sudanese army, underscores the escalating security challenges in the region. The Sudan Liberation Movement under Abdel Wahid Nur (SLM-AW) and the Gathering of Forces for the Liberation of Sudan led by Al-Tahir Hajer (GFLS-Hajer) confirmed the alliance after months of discussions. The force comprises six battalions, each with 250-300 soldiers drawn equally from both movements. “The neutral force began operations yesterday,” GFLS spokesperson Fathi Mohamed Abdu told Sudan Tribune on Sunday. “It will focus on protecting civilians and facilitating humanitarian aid in areas under our control.” Abdu stated that they are in talks with other neutral armed groups in Darfur to join the force but ruled out any immediate collaboration with the Sudan Liberation Movement – Transitional Council, the Justice and Equality Movement, or the Sudanese Alliance. which are allied with the Sudanese army.
