January 17, 2025 (JUBA) – South Sudan on Friday declared a countrywide curfew after protests targeting businesses owned by Sudanese traders broke out in the capital, Juba on Thursday night. The dusk-down-curfew, according South Sudan Police Service (SSPS) will begin from 6pm-6am. South Sudan police chief, General Abraham Manyuat told the state-owned television (SSBC) that members of the law enforcement institution would protect the lives and properties of all the people. “I would like to assure the citizens that police officers are responsible for their lives and property, they are responsible for public order and public health and the public has the freedom to move and to work, they can do whatever they want,” he stated. According to the police chief, these additional measures being taken are to prevent any transgressions against public and private property. He further stressed that the police are closely monitoring the situation and called on citizens to report any disturbances, warning that the police will not tolerate any transgressions and will deal with lawbreakers in accordance with the law.
