January 17, 2025 (JUBA) – A group of angry youth on Friday stormed the main market in Warrap State capital, Kuajok looting shops and vandalizing properties belonging to Sudanese traders. The protest follows the brutal killing of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan’s Gezira State after last weekend’s takeover of the town by Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). An eyewitness told Sudan Tribune that the demonstration started at about 6:00am. “More than 30 Sudanese shops were reported looted,” he said, adding that the police and organized forces fired in the air to disperse the youth. While no casualties were reported, state authorities intervened to protect the Sudanese traders. On Tuesday, the Sudanese army strongly condemned what it described as “individual violations” in some parts of Gezira state, promising that those responsible would be held accountable. South Sudan’s foreign ministry said it had received a “comprehensive report” from its embassy in Sudan “detailing the unfortunate events that have resulted in the loss of lives among our innocent citizens, who maintain a non-combatant status”.
