The Marine Wealth Directorate of the Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) has announced a six-month ban on shrimp fishing, trading, and sale in Bahrain’s territorial waters, effective from February 1 until July 31. The ban aims to preserve fish stocks and protect Bahrain’s marine resources, aligning with national efforts to ensure the sector’s sustainability. The Marine Wealth Directorate noted that the decision is part of broader efforts to safeguard the marine environment and promote natural resource conservation. The ban applies to all shrimp fishing methods in designated areas, and shrimp trading in markets will also be prohibited during this period to support stock sustainability. Inspection campaigns will continue in coordination with the Coast Guard to enforce the ban, with penalties imposed on violators in accordance with Decree (20) of 2002 on regulating and protecting marine wealth. The directorate also emphasised that any shrimp caught accidentally during the ban must be released back into the sea with proper care to ensure their survival.
