Parliament will debate on Tuesday a proposal to keep Bahrain’s waterfronts in public hands while ensuring their upkeep and accessibility. The plan, introduced by MP Muneer Seroor, calls for preserving public access to Bahrain’s 34 listed waterfronts, providing essential amenities, and preventing the loss of coastal spaces to private developments. He also advocates for keeping coastal areas under state management. However, the government has highlighted several ongoing projects aimed at enhancing public beaches. These include: Bahrain Bay Beach Project – a 600-meter shoreline covering 170,000 square meters, Qalali Beachfront development – a 100,000-square-meter site near Amwaj, Al Jazayer Beach – a 1.2-kilometer coastline upgrade by Edamah, and Busaiteen and Karzakan beach improvements, along with the Capital Waterfront Project. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) has also supported waterfront developments, such as Sa’ada, overlooking Manama, and enhancements to Al Jazayer Beach, which will include food outlets and visitor services. Despite these efforts, municipal councils across Bahrain have backed the proposal, and the Public Utilities and Environment Committee has endorsed it, citing strong public demand for better coastal management and expanded open spaces. The debate is expected to attract significant attention.
