History books loaded with methamphetamine have landed an Asian man in prison for five years, with a BD3,000 fine and orders for his permanent deportation.Now, he’s fighting the verdict, with the High Criminal Court of Appeal set to rule on 24 February.The High Criminal Court convicted the 36-year-old of illegally bringing in a psychoactive substance for trafficking.Along with the prison term, the court ordered the confiscation of the seized drugs and his removal from Bahrain once his sentence is served.The case unravelled when the Anti-Narcotics Directorate caught wind of a postal package coming from an Asian country via Bahrain International Airport.A customs officer, listed as the third prosecution witness, ran the parcel through an X-ray scanner, spotting a concealed substance inside two history books.Upon opening it, authorities found a crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine (‘shabu’), weighing 1.3 kilograms.Anti-narcotics officers set up a sting to catch the accused.
