Attempts to introduce over 9 quintals of cannabis resin via borders with Morocco thwarted

ALGIERS-Attempts to introduce more than nine (9) quintals of cannabis resin via the borders with Morocco were foiled, during operations carried out by combined detachments of the People’s National Army (PNA) and the national security from November 6 to 12, as per an operational report released on Wednesday by the PNA.

“As part of the sustainable efforts in the fight against terrorism and the multifaceted organized crime, units and detachments of the PNA carried out, from 06-12 November 2024, several operations that led to quality results mirroring the high professionalism, vigilance and constant availability of our Armed Forces nationwide,” said the same source.

In counterterrorism, PNA’s detachments “arrested 17 elements supporting terrorist groups during separate operations nationwide,” said the same source.

As part of the fight against organized crime, and “in a continuation of the ongoing efforts aimed to counter the scourge of drug trafficking in our country,” combined detachments of the PNA intercepted, in coordination with the different security services during operations carried out throughout the Military Regions, “32 drug traffickers, foiled attempts to introduce 9 quintals and 81 kilograms of cannabis resin into the country from the borders with Morocco, and sized 11.76 kilograms of cocaine along with 116824 psychotropic pills,” said the same source.

In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam and Djanet, PNA’s detachments “arrested 120 individuals and seized 42 vehicles, 203 generators, 185 jackhammers, 7 metal detectors, in addition to quantities of mixed stones and raw gold, explosives, detonation devices and equipment used in illegal gold mining operations,” said the same source.

“20 other individuals were arrested and 9 hunting rifles, 2 automatic pistols, 33230 litres of fuel, 58 quintals of tobacco as well as 63 tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling and speculation were seized, during separate operations nationwide.”

The Coast Guard also “thwarted, on the national coasts, attempts of illegal emigration of 413 individuals aboard makeshift boats, while 314 illegal immigrants of different nationalities were arrested nationwide,” concluded the press release. [/ecr]
