ALGIERS - The Minister of National Education, Abdelhakim Belaabed received on Monday at the ministry’s headquarters the President of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), Laurent Petrynka, in the presence of the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Mustapha Berraf.

On this occasion, Belaabed underscored Algeria’s “strategic and strong” achievements in school sports, enabling the country to secure “honorable standings” internationally, especially through implementing the orientations of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, concerning the creation of a school sports directorate within the central administration of the Ministry of Education. This directorate is responsible for implementing the national strategy to develop this type of sport.

In this regard, the minister said in a statement to the press that the file of physical education and sports was taken care of by specialists across 21,000 schools in Algeria, which is “a great achievement.”

He further underlined that the school sports directorate “is responsible for implementing the national strategy to develop and boost this type of sports within educational institutions, in coordination with the sectors concerned.”

Belaabed said he had informed ISF’s president that “the allocated hours for physical education and sports will be increased starting from the next school year, as part of the efforts to develop school sports,” a new step taken by Algeria in school sports.

Laurent Petrynka commended Algeria’s efforts in advancing school sports, noting that his visit to the country enabled him to witness “the extent to which Algeria aims to implement its model for school sports, which is a comprehensive approach advocated by the President of the Republic. This approach transcends merely organizing sports competitions and events, instead representing a transformative change underpinned by national reforms to school curricula, financing mechanisms, as well as local-level coordination with municipal authorities to construct sports infrastructure and recruit specialized instructors.”
