This first international symposium on Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs), organized by the National Anti-doping Agency, was attended by the Director General of Sports, Mustapha Ali Hassani, representing the minister of Sports, members of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee, national sports leagues, Algerian and foreign researchers and experts as well as top level Algerian athletes.

In an opening address at the meeting, the first of its kind to be held in Algeria, the Director General of Sports stressed the role of sports managers worldwide in promoting sound values of sports, to fight negative behaviours and practices such as doping, which is harmful to athletes' moral and physical health.

"In some cases, athletes may be suffering from a medical anomaly forcing them to take medicine or use banned substances, according to the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List. A therapeutic use exemption allows the athlete to use this substance or this method while participating in sports events, without committing an anti-doping rule violation or incurring an applicable sanction."
