Human rights situation is increasingly worsening in Western Sahara

ALGIERS- The president of the Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA), Ali Salem Tamek, said that the human rights situation in the occupied territories is more and more worsening, highlighting that “the silence and absence” of the international community have encouraged the Moroccan occupier to commit crimes against civilian Sahrawis.

“The Moroccan occupation continues systematically, due to the silence and absence of the international community in assuming their responsibilities regarding the situation in the occupied Western Sahara,” Tamek told APS.

In this regard, the activist raised the alarm about the reality of human rights in the occupied territory “because of the security, military and media blockade imposed by the occupation, and their flagrant refusal to authorize international delegations to enter the occupied territories, in order to continue committing inhuman crimes away from public view.”

In this context, Tamek said that in the 2021-2022 report, CODESA recorded a systematic multiplication in war crimes, genocide, forced displacements, deportations, property confiscation, home invasions, destruction of electricity meters,

ban on demonstrations and gatherings.

As for the role of the Sahrawi civil society’s organizations in fighting against the Moroccan crimes committed against the Sahrawi people, the President of Codesa explained that his organization is working to "document, denounce and inform human rights and humanitarian organizations about the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Moroccan occupation", despite the obstacles hampering their activities. [/ecr]
