In an address on the clause regarding the report of the Committee on Defence and Security, made during the works of the 45th session of the AU Executive Council, which began on Thursday, Mr Attaf stated that the Algerian delegation “commends the conclusions of the 16th session of the Technical Committee on Defence, Safety, and Security, notably the decisions and recommendations aimed at accelerating the activation of the African Standby Force (ASF).”
The minister also welcomed the AU Commission's announcement of the full operationalisation of the North Africa Regional Capability (NARC), which is part of the five regions of the ASF.
The announcement, Attaf added, was made following the “on-site inspections conducted by UN and African experts of various components of the ASF, and the military, civilian, and logistical capacities it holds, which genuinely meet all the relevant international standards.”
He stated that the achievements of the NARC “deserve to be applauded and encouraged” and that “its availability brings us closer to the activation of the ASF’s continental project, especially as our continent greatly needs this significant mechanism to address the increasing security threats facing our countries and peoples."
