ALGIERS- Three short films on the environment and psychological suffering caused by an increasingly materialistic modern society were screened on Monday, in Algiers, as part of the 11th International Film Festival of Algiers (FICA), in the presence of the filmmakers.

[ecr]  The short film “Toute la nuit” (All night long) by Algerian filmamker Faycal Hammoum which deals with the tragedy of two parents that lost their only daughter, who was murdered. The mother sank into a severe depressive state, pushing her to look for her daughter in the train stations and leisure parks.

Full of emotions, the 17-minute film reports the mother’s distress and helplessness who doesn’t accept the death of her only daughter despite the support of her husband.  

The short film “Le pont” (The bridge) by Algerian filmmaker Mohamed Taher Chawki Boukaf goes back over the suffering of a father and his sick son travelling by donkey to get to the hospital.

The journey is full of several annoyances which symbolically reflect the social and environmental problems such as pollution and traffic jams.

This six-minute film was awarded in the cinema and audiovisual category of the 15th President of the Republic Award for Young Creators “Ali Maachi” in 2021.

Canadian Albert Dupontel’s “Bye Bye Morons” relates in a comic style how the prime minister and his wife welcomed three cleaning ladies at their home on the occasion of their anniversary, through amusing situations and scenes.

The 11th International Film Festival of Algiers (FICA), dedicated to engaged films, will be held until 10 December, with the participation of 60 films of different countries, including 25 in competition.

This edition shed light notably on the issues of resistance, women and environment. [/ecr]
