Arab Health Ministers Council: Saihi chairs emergency meeting on Sudan

ALGIERS- The minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, chaired Monday an emergency meeting of the Arab Health Ministers Council on "the serious health and humanitarian situation arising from the escalation in the Republic of Sudan," the ministry said in a statement

The emergency meeting, held via video link, brought together the Assistant Secretary-General, Head of the Arab League's Social Affairs Sector, Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, the Egyptian minister of Health and Population and chairman of the Executive Board of the Arab Health Ministers Council, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Eastern Mediterranean, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, and the members of the Arab Health Ministers Council, the statement said.

In an opening address at the extraordinary session, Saihi stressed the "need to provide the Republic of Sudan with every necessary support in the health sector and meet the needs of the population as the health situation is deteriorating after two weeks of confrontation."

He added that Algeria, as the acting president of the Arab League Council at the level of the summit, and acting chairman of the Arab Health Ministers Council, "follows with great concern the latest developments in the Republic of Sudan," the statement said.

The emergency session comes on the basis of a statement by the extraordinary meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of the permanent delegates, the statement said.
