GENEVA, Nov 29 (KUNA) -- The United Nations commemorated on Friday the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, with the participation of Kuwait and representatives of UN member states and organizations, on the Rights of Self-Determination of the Palestinian People.
The Permanent Observer of Palestine to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Ibrahim Khreisheh gave a speech on behalf of the President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas, calling on the international community to take steps to hold the Israeli occupation accountable.
He also called to suspend the Israeli occupation's membership at the UN General Assembly, for refusing to abide by international law.
He pointed out that ignoring Palestinian rights for 76 years, granting the Israeli occupation immunity from accountability, and providing them continuous financial and military support are the main reasons behind their defiance of international law.
Abbas condemned the occupation's plans of annexation and expansion of settlements in the West Bank, as well as killing of innocents and demolishing their homes.
The Acting Head of the Permanent Mission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Bader Al-Mutairi exclaimed in his speech, on behalf of OIC Secretary-General Hissein Taha, the position of the organization to support the Palestinian people and their rights.
He stressed the important role the international community plays, especially in the UN Security Council, in stopping the Israeli occupation's aggression, and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
He added that the Israeli occupation ban on the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is a serious violation to the international community's commitment to Palestinian refugees, stressing the need to support the agency politically and financially to continue operations. (end)
