NEW DELHI, Dec 3 (KUNA) -- At least 12 people were killed and several others injured in wake of floods, landslides and incessant rains caused by cyclone Fengal in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, media reports said Tuesday.
The Press Trust of India said quoting official sources that floods, landslides and torrential rains that devastated 14 districts in Tamil Nadu, resulted in the loss of 12 human lives while 2,416 huts, 721 houses were destroyed and 963 cattle heads lost. In addition, massive damage was caused to roads, bridges, electricity, agriculture and irrigation systems.
The rescue team pulled out bodies of seven persons, including five children, trapped in a house in Thiruvannamalai district smashed by a boulder that fell on residential houses after rolling down from the top of Annamalaiyar Hill following a mud slip.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussion with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Stalin to assess the damage and pledged full support of the central government.
Educational institutions in Nilgiris, Ranipet, Salem and Thiruvannamalai districts of the state remained closed and people were asked to take all precautionary measures.
Flight, train services and road transportation were severely hit due to the situation in the state. Neighboring states of Puducherry, Kerala, Andhrapradesh, Karnataka and Telangana also received torrential rains and educational institutions were closed in several districts across these States.
