BRUSSELS, Feb 14 (KUNA) -- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed on Friday that she would accelerate the work on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, reiterating the EU's support for Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved, with strong security guarantees.
The EU chief and European Council President Antonio Costa met Ukrainian President Zelenskyy at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
They assured Zelenskyy that "a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace" is the one that "would lead to a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine and guarantee Ukraine's and Europe's security," according to a press release from the EU.
The EU top officials expressed Europe's readiness "to put Ukraine in a strong position ahead of any future negotiations and that Ukraine is provided with strong security guarantees."
They also stressed the need to increase European defense spending, strengthen European defense capabilities, and help reinforce Ukraine's armed forces. (end)
