BERLIN, Feb 18 (KUNA) -- The results of a poll revealed Tuesday a divided German public opinion on the country's participation in bringing peacekeeping troops to Ukraine.
According to the poll conducted by the research institute Forsa and Stern magazine, 49 percent of respondents supported Germany's involvement in the potential mission, while 44 percent opposed any German military engagement on Ukrainian soil. Another 7 percent remained undecided.
Both Chancellor Olaf Scholz and opposition leader Friedrich Merz agreed that peace negotiations to end the war had not yet begun.
Meanwhile, the US administration announced that Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had agreed to start negotiations, without European participation, to end the war. Talks between US and Russian officials began today in Riyadh.
Following Washington's announcement, top European officials, including Scholz, voiced concerns at the Munich security conference about a potential US-Russia agreement that could come at the expense of Ukraine and the EU. (end)
