NEW YORK, Feb 19 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Tareq Al-Bannai affirmed that the Palestine cause would remain the ultimate test of the legitimacy and credibility of the UN Charter.
This came at the UN Security Council's "Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance" late Tuesday, as Al-Bannai was speaking on behalf of the Arab Group.
He stressed that the Palestinan cause is linked to the core principles of the UN Charter, including the right to self-determination and prohibition of armed forces in unshared interests.
Al-Bannai underscored that it also aligned with all forms of international legitimacy, including resolutions from the UN General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Human Rights Council, as well as rulings from the international Criminal Court on war crimes and wars against humanity.
He warned that the ongoing Israeli occupation's violations of international laws without accountability send a dangerous message about the value of the efficiency of the global order.
He said that the UN was established to maintain peace and security, yet one-sided actions that defy all norms cannot be ignored, especially during Israeli occupation's relentless aggression and calls for displacement of Palestinians.
He urged the Security Council to uphold its responsibilities by ensuring a ceasefire under Resolution 2735, de-escalating tensions in the West Bank and other occupied territories, as well as facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Al-Bannai condemned the Israeli occupation Knesset's recent legislation banning UNRWA, describing it as direct result of the prolonged lack of accountability, stressing the need for collective international action to counter such violations.
On sustaining global peace and security, Al-Bannai called on Security Council members to adopt transparent and inclusive processes to address current and future threats, as he urged them to enforce their resolutions impartially, especially regarding the Palestinian issue.
Concluding his remarks, Al-Bannai reaffirmed the Arab Group's commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation, advocating for actions to fully implement the UN charter and empower the Security Council's role in global diplomacy. (end)
