DEAD SEA, JORDAN, Feb 19 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait will chair the fifth General Assembly of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) for 2025, taking the helm from the Kingdom of Jordan, which oversaw the position in 2024.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Communication Affairs Omar Al-Omar, after receiving the chairmanship from Jordanian Minister of Digital Economy Sami Smairat, affirmed that Kuwait would take its DCO responsibility with due diligence, pushing for the development of the organization on all spheres.
He mentioned the 2024 decision to bolster cooperation with the DCO during the GCC General Assembly presidency of Qatar, indicating that Kuwait's DCO chairmanship would intensify this aspect of the relations especially within the digital cooperation.
Al-Omar revealed that Kuwait would be holding several events within digitization during its tenure of the DCO's General Assembly, adding that topics such as digital rights, trademarks and cooperation between the private and public sectors would be part of Kuwait's chairmanship of the assembly.
Implementing the DCO's 2025-28 strategy to achieve the goals of the organization's members is one of the priorities for Kuwait, he affirmed, saying that support of the DCO coincided with its ambitions 2035 Vision to turn Kuwait into an economic and financial regional and international hub.
He noted that the recently announced regional land route linking Kuwait and the German city of Frankfurt was a great opportunity to explore partnerships especially within the digital domain and sustainable development.
On his part, Jordanian Minister Smairat said that the DCO was a platform to boost sustainable development and digitization worldwide.
He touted Jordan's great digitizing capabilities during the handing over ceremony, noting that around 27 percent of digital pioneers in the Middle East were from Jordan have senior positions in the Kingdom.
On her part, DCO's Secretary General Deemah Al-Yahya stressed the importance of overall digitization in all countries of the world, saying that no country should be left behind in this regard.
She affirmed that the DCO was looking forward to set a roadmap for the upcoming year to face challenges against rapid digitization especially in the era of Artifical Intelligence.
Al-Yahya revealed that digital transformation in economy represented around 15 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of several countries and it was growing at the twice the pace of traditional economy.
The DCO's General Assembly is held in the Dead Sea region with the participation of member countries, international organizations, as well as experts in digital economy. (end)
