WASHINGTON, 21 Feb (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump, again threatened BRICS nations with "150 percent tariff" and trade restrictions if they adopt currency other than the US dollar, citing concerns over its global status as secure trade currency.
Speaking at a Republican Governors Association (RGA) meeting, late Thursday, Trump accused BRICS of "trying to destroy our dollar".
"They wanted to create a new currency, so when I came in, the first thing I said was any BRICS states that even mentions the destructions of the dollar will be charged a 150 percent tariff, and we don't want your goods and BRICS states just broke up" he said.
In a November post on Truth Social, weeks after his re-election, Trump stated " the idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is over" He warned BRICS countries against creating a new currency or supporting an alternative to the US dollar, saying they would face tariffs and could lose access to the American market.
BRICS, an economic bloc established in 2006, includes Russia, China, India, and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011, the group expanded further in 2024, adding Iran, Ethiopia, and other nations. (end) asj.sar
