GENEVA, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- The President of the United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang emphasized on Monday the complete implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza is essential for ensuring the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid describing the ceasefire as a "glimmer of hope" amidst the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region.
During his opening speech at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva Yang stressed that achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East is contingent upon the implementation of a two-state solution.
He reiterated that this solution remains the only pathway to peace allowing both parties to live side by side in security under international law and United Nations resolutions.
Yang stressed that global challenges such as armed conflicts are exacerbating human rights conditions in different regions underscoring the need for increased international attention to these crises.
Yang also welcomed the establishment of an independent fact-finding mission to investigate human rights violations in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo noting that this was an important step toward promoting accountability for ongoing violations.
The UN General Assembly President further stated that more than 300 million people worldwide are currently in need of humanitarian assistance as a result of growing violations of international humanitarian law stressing that such violations have dire consequences for civilians particularly women and children who bear the greatest burden in armed conflicts.
